“As a mother of 5 young sons, and married for 10 years, I know just how important it is to parents that their children feel comfortable, safe and happy when away from home. We open our doors to international students in the hope of offering a welcoming and caring home to any child who needs one, giving them a place they can truly feel is a home away from home. As a result of hosting we now have many new friends dotted around the world who we hope to see again someday, and a couple who we have already met in their home-countries! It is these desires and experience that drive my role as a Key Guardian, helping to make sure the recruitment and allocation of families goes as well and as smoothly as possible., and is right for each student. As a large family, our days are busy and exciting days. Between the children’s activities, we like to plan adventures and trips exploring new places as well as our favourite spots such as the beach, paddle boat trips up the river, and country walks. In my spare time I enjoy photography, art, singing and playing the flute as well as seeing family and friends. Our latest adventure was a 5 week road-trip through France. Ann Doyle has been involved with Sutherland Education guardianship since 2004. Her introduction was through being a Governor at Bromsgrove School, as well as two local primary schools. She served as a District Councillor for 21 years and has been Chairman of Council. Ann was also a Company Director for a number of years.
She has three adult sons who boarded at independent schools and Ann is all too familiar with how challenging attending boarding school in a different country might be for international students. Ann has six grandchildren.

In her many years with SE Ann has had more than 20 children from all over the country attending different independent schools; some of them from 13 years old through to their graduation. Many still keep in touch with Ann through email and Facebook
I strongly believe that guardianship is more important than ever in this world of enormous economic and technological advances. It is vital that young people, living many miles away from their parents, always have someone close by to turn to outside of school, for assistance whether personal or otherwise. Jenny’s experience with boarding school students started as a child where she was brought up within a large school due to her parents ‘profession’.
She has carried on the passion to help each child achieve their goals and to believe in themselves through many jobs; teaching EFL (English as a foreign language) and gaining an MA in this field, through the role of local co-ordinator for a large guardian agency for seven years, running summer schools and short stay groups with a vast range of students from different nationalities and backgrounds, and sourcing host families who care and treat each child as if their own.

She worked as a freelance violinist for many years in London, and following the birth of her daughter, worked in Australia as a piano teacher. Back in the UK, as homemaker, Jeanette has continued life as a musician and pursued a career as a fine artist. She is currently a Committee Member and Trustee for her daughter’s independent school Parents’ Association…Over the years she has helped organise and run many of the events held during the school calendar and has enjoyed the aspect of meeting, working with and befriending many parents, staff, and students she perhaps wouldn’t have otherwise met.

Jeanette’s interest in education and dedication to working with young people has been evident throughout her career. In the Music Department of Westminster Abbey, she worked very closely alongside the Westminster Abbey Choir School, and as a violinist she performed many concerts with the Young Persons Concert Foundation, a charity dedicated to bringing music into the lives of young people.
Her piano teaching career in Tasmania began with The Music Tree, an organisation dedicated to encouraging music from an early age, and this led to her working as a visiting piano teacher for a number of schools in Northern Tasmania, giving lessons from her own studio, and presenting concerts in local venues for her students to perform in.
Jeanette thoroughly enjoys working with the team at Sutherland Education, helping young international students to feel happy, safe and nurtured during their time in the UK.
“When I was approached to join Sutherland Education it felt like an opportunity to combine all my previous work experience in educational roles with my enthusiasm for meeting new people. Having attended boarding school myself, I feel particularly empathetic to the challenges of living away from home at a young age, both towards the students, and as mother myself – an innate sense of care and consideration for their parents also.”

Born into a long line of educators, Maria’s life has been entwined with schools from the very beginning- and being in a school setting is still where she feels most at home. A Durham graduate, English teacher, CELTA qualified, and having experienced boarding school life from almost every angle, Maria is the ideal port of call for anyone navigating the independent boarding system. With three children of her own, Maria is a nurturing and supportive presence who is always ready to help and problem solve, and always with a smile. Outside of work, I am most likely to be found ferrying my children and their friends to their various clubs and activities before turning to the pool for a swim myself. My first hand experience of all things boarding has furnished me with a solid understanding of a student’s experience from (even before) the moment they arrive in the UK, and the huge significance of the guardian role within this journey.
