University Guardianship

University Guardianship Service

seperator

If a student is under 18 when they begin university, they are legally considered a minor in the UK, so universities have a duty of care to ensure these students are well supported. Many universities require their young students to appoint a responsible adult or organization based in the UK to act on behalf of an international student who is under 18.

This guardianship level serves as an emergency contact and helps with issues that may arise during the student’s time at university and meets the UKVI requirements

Frequently Asked Questions

seperator
Does a student under 18 at university still need a guardian?
Yes. A student who starts university before turning 18 is still legally a minor, and is therefore required by the university and UKVI to have a UK-based guardian until they reach 18. The guardian provides local support and a responsible point of contact during that time.

Our University guardianship includes:

  • 24-hour support
  • Emergency accommodation
  • A key guardian contact
  • Visits on request
  • Any of our other services as and when requested
The student and the university can reach a key guardian contact at any time of day or night. Sutherland can then arrange emergency accommodation and any practical or personal support the student needs, and keep the parents informed throughout.

We support students at universities across England and in South Wales, through our network of guardians and key guardians. We do not currently cover Scotland. How the support is arranged depends on where the student is studying.
