Frequently Asked Questions

What is Homestay guardianship?
Homestay guardianship places the student with a regular homestay or host family during exeats, half terms and holidays, so they always have a home from home when the school is closed. Alongside the host family, the student receives full guardian support, with 24/7 contact for parents, the school and the student. It is often chosen by families who want the reassurance of a caring family setting on a regular basis.

Every host family is chosen with great care and must pass our safeguarding checks before they can welcome a student. In short, that means an enhanced DBS check for everyone in the household aged 16 or over, an in-person interview and home inspection, and two checked references, followed by annual revisits.

We set out exactly how we vet and support our families in our guide: Becoming a Sutherland host family

When the school closes for an exeat weekend or half term and a student is not flying home, we arrange a homestay for them. For a Homestay student this will be their regular host family; for a Light student it will be one of our available homestay families. The family provides accommodation, three meals a day and day-to-day care. Our office number during office hours and our emergency number at all times are always available throughout the stay in case anything is needed.

We aim to match students with host families in convenient locations for their school or college, and where a family is based is taken into account when finding the right fit. We listen to each student’s requirements and interests when matching them, and if a student is not happy with their host family we work to replace it immediately.
Yes. For students in the Homestay category our aim is to arrange a regular host family, which helps build a special bond. That continuity helps students feel at home, as they have a familiar, settled base each time.
