Become a Homestay Guardian

seperator

International students studying in the UK who are under the age of 18 are usually required to have a guardian. They also need a homestay for one or two weekends per term and for their half term holiday if not returning home.

As a homestay guardian you offer a student a home from home, allowing them to enjoy the same freedom as a home student – that is, to be free to have a break from the school during exeat weekends and a place to stay during half term holidays. In this way, their experience in the UK is enhanced socially, culturally and linguistically by the opportunity to spend time with a UK family in a secure and friendly environment. The culturally enriching experience can benefit all!

How do I become a host family for international students?

Becoming a host family starts with an application to Sutherland Education. We then visit your home, carry out the necessary checks, and once you are approved you can welcome students during term breaks or for longer stays, with our support throughout. To request an application form, call 0203 808 3800 or email contact@sutherland-education.com.

Hosting an international student means providing a welcoming home, a private room, meals and everyday care during the student’s stay. We do not require you to be with the student around the clock, and many of our host families work full time. Depending on a student’s age and maturity, there are set times a student can be left alone in the house during the day. What we do ask for is a safe, friendly place where a student can relax and study during school breaks.

Yes. Host families receive payment to cover the cost of welcoming a student into their home. We currently pay £70 per day to host students aged 14 and over, and £75 per day to host students under 14, paid directly into your bank account. There are other costs you can claim, as set out in the literature we provide.

We carry out the required safeguarding checks on every host family before they can welcome a student. In short, this is an enhanced DBS check for everyone in the household aged 16 or over, an in-person interview and home inspection, and two checked references.

Hosting can be as flexible as the occasional exeat weekend or half term, or a longer arrangement across a full term. Let us know what works for your household and we will match you accordingly.

A popular request from parents is a regular homestay for their child during school breaks. This falls under our Homestay category and usually involves a host family being available around two weekends per term and for a one-week half term, though some schools’ half terms run to two weeks. There is no guarantee that a student will stay with the same host family for every break, but where a student has the same host family over two to three years there is every opportunity to build a lasting bond and a real home from home.
